The area which has seen a big increase in reports of rats during lockdown

There has been a big increase in reports of rats in South Gloucetershire during lockdown.

South Gloucestershire Council - which has had a 26% rise in reports this April and May - is the only in the area to have a significant increase.

The warm and dry weather has been blamed for the rise as it has made for ideal breeding conditions.

A spokesman for South Gloucestershire Council said: “We have seen a 26 per cent overall rise in reports of rats this April and May compared to the same period last year.

“We think this is partly due to the warm and dry weather this year, which has made for ideal breeding conditions.”

The council hasn't noticed any specific areas where reports have been higher.

North Somerset Council said there had been a small increase, but added they do not provide a pest control service. They provide advice and deal with some pests in certain circumstances.

Both Bristol City Council and Bath and North East Somerset Council have said they haven't seen significant increases.

In April, experts warned Britain's homes were being invaded by hungry rats seeking other food sources following the closure of restaurants due to the coronavirus lockdown.

Rodents are sneaking in under doors, through cracks and even in drains in search of a meal, exterminators warn.

It is thought the pests are becoming increasingly desperate as their regular food sources dwindle while people stay inside.

The British Pest Control Association (BPCA) is one of the leading authorities on dealing with rodents.

The group said around half of the professionals it had polled during lockdown had seen an increase in activity.
