The area where coronavirus outbreak in jail has tripled Covid rates in one week

Coronavirus rates in the Derbyshire Dales have almost tripled in just one week thanks to a spike in cases at a local prison.

The East Midlands spot has recorded a significant jump in cases in the days before lockdown easing began.

Cases shot up in the days before schools began reopening as England begins to relax its lockdown.

Health officials believe the flurry of cases at HMP Sudbury has driven the spike in the region.

The latest figures show the Derbyshire Dales now has has the highest Covid rate in England, as case numbers continue to track down almost everywhere else.

The area recorded 130 new cases recorded in the seven days to March 7 - the equivalent of 179.7 cases per 100,000 people.

This is up from 60.8 per 100,000 in the seven days to February 28.

The number of cases went from 44 to 130 in the space of one week.

Derbyshire's director of public health Dean Wallace said an outbreak at HMP Sudbury is believed to have driven the spike.

He told the BBC the Derbyshire Dales had previously consistently recorded among the lowest rates in the county, and had been recording smaller numbers than elsewhere in the country.

Public health authorities say the spike in Derbyshire is being driven by an outbreak at HMP Sudbury (SWNS.com)

"Community transmission is still falling. The reason the rates have jumped up the way they have done is linked to an outbreak at the prison," he said.

In a statement to the broadcaster, HMP Sudbury said it was working with Public Health England (PHE) to "keep everyone safe and minimise the spread" as it worked to curb the outbreak.

According to the latest PHE figures, of the 315 local areas in England, 23 (7%) have seen a rise in case rates, 291 (92%) have seen a fall and one is unchanged.

The list has been calculated by the PA news agency based on Public Health England data published on March 11 on the Government's coronavirus dashboard.

The figures, for the seven days to March 7, are based on tests carried out in laboratories and in the wider community.

The rate is expressed as the number of new cases per 100,000 people.

Data for the most recent four days (March 8-11) has been excluded as it is incomplete and does not reflect the true number of cases.

Here is the list in full. From left to right, it reads: name of local authority; rate of new cases in the seven days to March 7; number (in brackets) of new cases recorded in the seven days to March 7; rate of new cases in the seven days to February 28; number (in brackets) of new cases recorded in the seven days to February 28.
