The area of Greater Manchester where nearly one in 50 people has Covid

Coronavirus infection rates in Bolton are continuing to rise rapidly, with one area now recording nearly one case for every 50 people.

Transmission rates are the highest they have been in six months after 1,300 positive tests were recorded in the last week, a rate of 452 cases per 100,000 people.

But, in the Lever Edge area of the borough the figures are significantly higher, with 1,940 cases per 100,000 people, the equivalent of nearly one infection for every 50 people, data from Public Health England shows.

Lever Edge, in Great Lever, was among several areas in the BL3 and BL4 postcodes that had been singled out by Bolton public health bosses when infections began to spike weeks ago.

They have been targeting the area for more than a week and much of that time has been spent rapidly vaccinating as many people as possible from a pop-up site at Essa Academy, off Lever Edge Lane.

This has been largely successful, with Bolton's NHS CCG vaccinating thousands of local people from the site - including more than 6,500 in just one weekend.

However, it is thought that it will take at least two weeks for the jabs to offer significant resistance to the virus and experts believe it will take two doses for the vaccine to be effective against the more transmissible B.1.617.2 strain of the virus, often called the Indian variant, which has been behind Bolton's sudden rise in cases.

When it publishes data about Covid infections in the UK, Public Health England divides towns into Middle Super Output Areas (MSOAs).

These are small areas with populations of around 7,000 people and are used to give a more precise picture of infections in certain places.

Currently, Bolton has seven of the top ten MSOAs with the country's highest infection rates.

Lever Edge has the highest rates but Rumworth North (1,653 cases per 100,00 people) and Rumworth South (1,377) are second and third in the country.

Other places with high rates include the area around Springfield in Great Lever, Daubhill, Halliwell, Heaton and Deane.

The other places that make up the top ten are Bastwell in Blackburn (774) and two places in Bedford, Kingsbrook (755) and Queen's Park (696).
