The area of Greater Manchester dubbed the 'smartest place in England'

An area of Greater Manchester has been dubbed the 'smartest place in England'.

A recent study puts Trafford at the top of the list of the brightest areas in the country.

Research from Supplement Place looked at a number of education-related factors in all local authorities across England and ranked the areas by score.

Trafford scored an overall mark of 7.43 out of 10 - ranking it top of the list.

The borough scored impressively on all fronts, with a higher rate of 16-18-year-olds going on to higher education than anywhere else in the country.

The area, which is home to some of the region's most prestigious independent schools, also had the third highest rate of students achieving at least two A-levels at 92.8 per cent.

40 per cent of schools in Trafford are rated as 'outstanding' by Ofsted, the study also claims.

The research put Lancashire as the second smartest place in England, followed by Newham, Hertfordshire and Barnet.

Swindon, Portsmouth, Southampton, the Isle of White and Knowsley were at the bottom of the list.

In the M.E.N's secondary school guide published in 2020, seven of the top 10 schools were in Trafford.

Altrincham Grammar School for Girls was ranked as the best school in Greater Manchester.

Other Trafford schools in the top 10 included Loreto Grammar School, Sale Grammar School, Stretford Grammar School and Altrincham Grammar School for Boys.
