The appalling tackle on a Wales player that's sparked major controversy during a famous win over New Zealand

Welsh rugby fans were left furious by a controversial decision in the under-20s game against New Zealand this afternoon.

Wales stunned their opponents with a magnificent 8-7 victory, , but the fifth place semi-final of the World Rugby u20s Championship in Argentina was partly overshadowed by one incident.

Early in the second half, with Wales leading 5-0 thanks to a first half try from Tiaan Thomas-Wheeler, full-back Ioan Davies was clattered by the Baby Blacks' Samipeni Finau after claiming a high ball.

Wales players reacted angrily to the challenge and replays showed their anger was justified.

Referee Christopher Ridley consulted with his TMO and the replays showed Finau's shoulder making contact with Davies' head as his arms swung forward recklessly.

However, Ridley deemed that Finau initially grazed Davies' shoulder and decided the Welshman dropped his height as the Kiwi approached to make the tackle.

The referee, who has already sent three players off in the tournament, showed a yellow card.

Last month, World Rugby introduced new guidelines that state if 'the ball carrier suddenly drops in height (e.g from an earlier tackle, trips/falls or dives to score)' then it is a mitigating factor.

Davies was landing after jumping to claim a high ball and his height was lowered as a result of bending his knees to land safely.

But the general feeling on social media was that it wasn't an unexpected change in height, therefore shouldn't have been a mitigating factor, and that the Kiwi should have been sent off.
