The angle that proves Gareth Bale should have been awarded the goal that sent Wales to the World Cup

Wales are going to their first World Cup in 64 years, and Sunday's game was arguably the biggest moment in Welsh sporting history. So there is bound to be a touch of controversy along the way.

Gareth Bale's free-kick on 33 minutes ignited the flame on a historic night in Cardiff, but since then, whether it was his goal or not has been heavily debated by fans on social media. The goal was given to Andriy Yarmolenko of Ukraine.

Bale drove a trademark dipping free-kick towards Georgiy Bushchan's goal from 30 yards out, before Yarmolenko headed the ball into his own net. The rules suggest that if a deflected shot is already on target, then it may be awarded to the player who shot at goal, in this case, Bale.

We may finally have the evidence to suggest the talismanic former Real Madrid star should have been awarded the goal that sent his country to their first World Cup since 1958.

It is difficult to see whether the strike was on target when watching the match coverage, but this clip bares all as Bale's effort appears destined for the bottom right corner. Whether Bushcan would've got there or not is irrelevant in context of the rules.

On the other hand, this is not something that Bale or the Red Wall will be hugely concerned about. A momentous result in Cardiff has welded the country together, as we look towards our first World Cup in a long, long time.
