The ancient Scottish pagan worship site 'haunted by fairies' you can visit this spring

With the cold weather hopefully easing off for a while, now is the perfect opportunity to head out and enjoy the natural beauty of Scotland.

While there is an undoubtedly a limitless supply of scenic walking routes and historical sites to visit, those who are after something a bit different this spring may be interested in Dunino Den.

This fascinating place, situated in the East Neuk of Fife near the village of Dunino, is in fact an ancient pagan ritual site. Found within a strip of woodland, it can be accessed via a path leading down from the nearby Dunino Church.

The worship spot includes a crag that is referred to as the Altar Stone, where some believe that ancient druids would carry out human sacrifices—though there is no archaeological evidence of this. These supposed sacrifices are said to have been conducted at a well cut into the top of the large rock.

Next to the well is a carved footprint, which only adds to the mysterious and fantastical nature of the site. It is said that footprint carvings were important in ancient initiation rituals, further leading historians to believe that Dunino Den was an important site of druidic worship.

Walking down the carved stone steps, you are led into a natural 'den' below. Here, you will find a number of faces, Celtic crosses, and spiritual-looking symbols etched into the cliff face by ancient worshippers.

The site still attracts pilgrims to this day, and visitors will find numerous offerings left over the years such as ribbons and coins.

Druids and pagans continue to view the site as sacred, seeing it as a gateway to the otherworld. Many of the objects have been left as tokens of remembrance for deceased friends and family members.

Given the mystical history of Dunino Den, it is no wonder that many people believe it to be haunted. It is commonly thought that the site is home to fairies and other forest spirits, and looking around the magical and celestial woodland, it is hard to imagine a place better suited for them.

If you're heading to the beautiful site to see it for yourself, make sure you are careful when walking down the steps from the altar—especially when wet—as they are very uneven.
