'I nearly threw up' - How Newcastle legend Kevin Keegan's 'love it' rant nearly didn't happen

Kevin Keegan's famous 'I will love it!' rant nearly did not happen - because of a foul smell that left Sky Sports reporter Geoff Shreeves scrambling for some air freshener.

The former Newcastle United boss spoke to Richard Keys and Andy Gray, who were back in the studio, after the Magpies' 1-0 win against Leeds United exactly 25 years ago.

With just two league games to go, Newcastle's victory at Elland Road in April, 1996 kept the pressure on leaders Manchester United and it was clear that Keegan wanted to get something off his chest in his post-match interview.

Manchester United had narrowly defeated Leeds at Old Trafford 12 days previously and Alex Ferguson said Howard Wilkinson's side were 'cheating' their manager by raising their game against the league leaders before adding 'you wait and see the difference' when they play Newcastle.

Keegan had also been irked by suggestions that the outcome of Newcastle's penultimate league fixture against Nottingham Forest could be influenced by the Magpies agreeing to play in Stuart Pearce's testimonial at the City Ground six days later.

We all know what happened next as Keegan declared that 'we're still fighting for this title and he's got to go to Middlesbrough and get something and I tell you, honestly, I will love it if we beat them. Love it!'

The interview has gone down in history but it very nearly did not happen as Shreeves revealed in a discussion with Richie Prior for Radio News Hub.

"I was stood there in the room. The funny thing about that was, first of all, the interview nearly didn't happen," he said.

"It was out of the stadium at Elland Road. You actually had to go outside and across into this little room.

"I had gone in there to check everything was all OK in there and ready to do the interview down the line and one of the riggers, an old boy, shall we say, obviously had something for lunch that upset his stomach.

"I nearly threw up when I went in there. There was no way you could ask someone to come in there to do an interview.

"So I ran back in to see Sean, the kit man at Leeds, and said, 'Have you got any air freshener?'

"'Air freshener?' he said. 'What do you think this is? House and Home?'

"I said, 'I'm desperate!' He gave me one of the player's deodorants that had a nice smell so I ran back and sprayed it all and it was all right.

"It was an iconic moment."
