The amount of money raised for Ayrshire's NHS thanks to Captain Tom and other donors

Captain Sir Tom Moore and other big-hearted donors helped raise more than £554,000 for the NHS in Ayrshire.

The late Second World War veteran and people throughout the country took part in fundraisers to support health workers battling the Covid crisis at the peak of the pandemic.

Captain Sir Tom raised almost £33 million for NHS Charities Together during the first lockdown last year by walking laps of his garden.

Derek Lindsay, health board director of finance, said: “NHS Ayrshire & Arran received a total of £554,384 from NHS Charities Together, the charity into which the funds raised by Captain Sir Thomas Moore and many other public donations were paid and subsequently distributed to all health boards across the UK.”

Captain Sir Tom, who died with coronavirus in February aged 100, provided a huge inspiration during the pandemic.

He had originally only aimed to raise £1000 for NHS Charities Together by walking in his Bedfordshire garden.

Ayr, Carrick and Cumnock SNP MP Allan Dorans said: “I am delighted to hear that NHS Ayrshire & Arran will benefit significantly from the substantial amount of money raised by individuals and organisations undertaking voluntary fundraising.”

Conservative Prestwick councillor Hugh Hunter said: “Clearly Captain Tom was a war hero. He was one of many who showed outstanding leadership and bravery in protecting our country during World War II.

“He continued to show leadership right up to his death. A simple act of selflessness – the walk in his garden – caught the imagination of the British public and people around the world.”
