'The Americans' won the Golden Globe for best drama. What is happening?

The Golden Globes are known for red carpet fashions, serving as an early (if inconsistent) indicator of Oscar voting tendencies and the occasional unexpected outburst from the stage. Like most awards shows, the Globes aren't exactly known for getting their winners right, at least as far as critical consensus is concerned.

And yet, here we are. Ignored by the Hollywood Foreign Press in the series category each of its five prior seasons, FX's "The Americans" won for best drama series Sunday night with its first nomination, which it earned for its acclaimed final season.

The overdue recognition may have amounted to a make-up win after years of neglect by the HFPA, but a deserved win is a deserved win, and Twitter fell silent with its usual litany of complaints. It felt a little strange.

Set amid the many tangles of international intrigue between the U.S. and Russia in the 1980s, the espionage drama felt especially timely as the Cold War machinations of decades gone by returned to headlines surrounding Russia's attempts to intervene in the election on social media and the Robert Mueller investigation.

Series star Matthew Rhys is also up for leading actor in a drama series _ Keri Russell lost to Sandra Oh in the leading actress in a drama series category _ so the series may not be done yet with its victory lap. It would be equally surprising given both have only been nominated once before (in 2017) for their roles, but now that the Globes have finally recognized the show, another win feels like far less of a long shot.
