The amazing moments Welsh lottery winners learnt they had become millionaires

Some of the most goosebump-worthy winner calls, have been released by the National Lottery ahead of Friday's (September 24) £111m Euromillions draw.

The new advert includes Welsh winners Stephen Schiltz, who scooped £1m in 2019 and Diane Bate, who was a £3.8m winner in December last year.

Diane, from Rhyl, was so shocked to have won a staggering £3.8m she checked her numbers six times, before being physically sick.

The 70-year-old, who is married to Michael, 74, said she couldn’t believe her eyes when so many zeros flashed up on her National Lottery app, “I just went into a state of shock and then I was physically sick,” she added.

She said she then spent the rest of the day in a complete daze, as news of her massive win slowly started to sink in.

“I was in complete disbelief when I saw the amount I’d won on the National Lottery app – the most I’d ever won was £100, so to see that many zeros flash up was unbelievable," added the former social services worker.

"It was a Sunday morning and I was the only one in the house who was awake so I went to wake up my husband. I kept asking him to check the app over and over again until the news finally sunk in. I didn’t think it was real until about the sixth time of checking, at which point I was physically sick!"

In his call, retired lorry driver Stephen can be heard jumping up and down and screaming during his call after becoming an overnight millionaire.

He says: "I nearly had a heart attack making that call! I felt a real mixture of emotions – it was excitement and disbelief and everything else rolled into one.

"Making that call was the best feeling in the world,” he says. “The realisation that all your money worries are gone is like nothing else. I was screaming and jumping up and down. We have always struggled with our finances but moving to Wales seven months before our win seems to have brought us good fortune. We have been so happy here."

New research carried out by The National Lottery has unveiled the most likely reactions and emotions the Welsh would have after finding out they had won big on The National Lottery.

The findings suggest that most Welsh respondents would be practical following a lottery win and firstly work out who to give money to (35%). They would then let loose and kiss their partner (34%).

UK-wide, practicality comes much further down the list of priorities, where the general response would be an emotional rollercoaster of kissing (35%), screaming at the top of their lungs (29%) or bursting into tears (28%).

Having paid out almost £3bn in major prizes, Camelot’s Andy Carter, senior winners advisor at The National Lottery from Llantrisant, has seen every reaction possible.

“Unsurprisingly, we get to see a lot of happy people in our job but their reactions certainly differ. Some people feel sick, some people jump up and down, some people are having a party when we arrive, others haven't told a single soul - I've even had people fainting!," he says.

"I’ve been there with winners when they reveal to family and friends that they’ve won. That's lovely as it’s a very private moment for them and you can see the genuine shock and delight on people’s faces.

"Winners tell me their emotions aren’t anything like they thought - I suppose you never know how you will react until you have to make that amazing call to Camelot. And who knows, the massive EuroMillions jackpot of £111m this Friday could provoke even more extreme emotions if a UK player were to win!"
