The amazing free flight simulator app that lets you fly planes on your phone

The longer lockdown goes on, the longer it's looking like it will be before we'll be able to board a plane again.

With most flights cancelled, holidays on hold and travel restrictions in force around the world, jetting off anywhere simply isn't an option for now.

But you can experience aviation another way - behind the virtual controls of a flight simulator.

X-Plane Mobile is a free app that puts you in the cockpit to learn to fly planes, using your phone as the yoke.

It includes nine free tutorials, teaching you the basics of taking off and landing in a realistic, interactive 3D cockpit complete with working gauges, displays, buttons and switches.

You can take to the sky in a Cessna 172SP or a Cirrus Vision SF50 in the free version of the app, which lets you explore five scenery regions: Oahu, Hawaii; Grand Canyon, USA; Seattle/Tacoma, USA; Juneau, Alaska; and Innsbruck, Austria.

Each area features detailed terrain, lifelike city buildings and 3D airports with terminal buildings, jetways and hangars.

More planes are available as individual in-app purchases, including an Airbus A320 Airliner, a Boeing 777-200ER Airliner, an F-22 Raptor Fighter and many more.

You can access the entire fleet with a professional subscription, which also unlocks access to more than 37,000 airports and global scenery, for £5.49 a month or £47.49 a year.

If you'd rather just fly one of the free planes, or buy your favourite, a basic subscription is also available including the global scenery and airports only, for £4.69 a month or £40.99 a year.

The app is available on both Apple and Android devices.
