The "amateur" road repair that covered a manhole and neighbours can pull up with their fingers

People living in one part of Merseyside are fuming after 'amateur' workmen  'ruined' their street.

One man living on Crawford Avenue in Maghull says the road has been resurfaced but that such a shoddy job has been done that it looks 'worse than before'.

He said: "I tripped over [the upturned road] going to the car and caught it with my toe.

"I saw it was missing a bit and decided to look at it. Where I’ve turned my car wheels has made a indentation... surely that shouldn't happen? Surely I shouldn't be able to pull it up with my fingers?

"Why are they using such sub standard contractors?

"They also paved over my 80+ year old neighbour's meter and stop tap the other month. He’s had a nightmare trying to get someone to uncover it.

"It looks horrendous, worse than before, now they've covered a manhole.

"Gang of amateurs, it's like black sandpaper paint."

Another man added: "How they call this a fix is beyond me. It’s going to degrade quicker than the surface that was there before. Won’t last five minutes, never mind the winter."

Sefton Council, however, say the resurfacing works could extend the life of Crawford Avenue's road surface.

A spokeswoman for the local authority said: "The resurfacing works are part of a range of proactive treatment options to prolong the life of our highways.

"The type applied can extend the life of Crawford Avenue for up to five years.

"The work in question was installed last week and these treatments need to be trafficked and do take time to bed effectively however, sites are adequately inspected following completion to ensure they comply with the required contract specifications.

"Residents who wish to raise concerns can contact us either through the contact centre on 0345 140 0345 or at Highway.enquiries@sefton.gov.uk "
