The alternative position Hakim Ziyech can play in Frank Lampard's Chelsea team next season

Frank Lampard has already started to put his Chelsea squad together for the 2020/21 season with the addition of Hakim Ziyech.

Unable to bring in new signings at the start of the year despite their transfer ban coming to an end just in time for the January window, the Blues confirmed the arrival of the Ajax ace a month later.

The Moroccan international has signed a five-year deal at Stamford Bridge and he will play a big role for the team over the coming years.

Despite having a lot of attacking options at his disposal already, the Chelsea head coach has strengthened even further in that department given the 27-year-old is capable of playing as an attacking midfielder or on the right wing.

Chelsea Q&A with Oliver Harbord

Speaking to the club's official website after confirming his move to the club, Ziyech outlined the team's attacking football as a major reason for his move to west London.

"Happy, proud, I am excited and I cannot wait," the Moroccan told the club's official website.

"It [Chelsea] is a big club in a big competition. I like the style of play, they play really attacking football, and that is something that fits me and that is one of the biggest reasons I chose therefore."

A very good replacement for Willian as he looks increasingly likely to depart once his contract expires in the summer, Ziyech can also play in an alternative role to give Lampard even more choice.

Playing as an attacking midfielder in 178 games and as a right winger on 73 occasions throughout his club career so far, the ex-FC Twente man can also be utilised as a central midfielder if required.

Ziyech has played in 34 games in the middle of the park, scoring five goals and registering 15 assists in the process.

The Eredivisie ace did play in 21 matches there for Ajax in his debut season at the Johan Cruiff ArenA but he hasn't featured much in that role for the Dutch giants since.

While Lampard will be keen to use his attacking qualities either as a right winger or attacking midfielder, he can play a bit deeper and pull the strings from the middle if required.

Certainly not a player you'd want in a midfield two as it would restrict his ability to make things happen in the final third, a three-man midfield, which Chelsea have used 15 times in the league this season, would be more suited to Ziyech as he would be able to push forward often due to having a defensive midfielder behind him.

However, it's an area the Europa League holders are well stocked in and the new signing is better suited to playing further forward where he can inflict more damage.

Ziyech does give Lampard plenty of options next campaign and one thing for sure is that he will be a huge hit if he can replicate his Ajax form in the capital.
