The Ally McCoist Rangers training haymaker that revealed his burning desire to win at all costs

Jimmy Nicholl has revealed an epic training ground bust-up with former teammate Ally McCoist as he selected the hitman in his best XI of former teammates.

Speaking to the BBC, the Dundee assistant manager explained he had been asked to referee the reserve team's training when a straightforward foul turned into an explosive confrontation.

But rather than hold grudges, Nicholl reckons the anecdote shows the desperate desire to win that drove McCoist to a 355-goal haul that makes him the leading scorer in Rangers ' history.

Nicholl recalled: "He hooked me once at Jordanstown, he caught me right on the edge of my chin.

"I was taking the reserves and Graeme Souness told me I was refereeing.

"It was two touches and McCoist took three touches so I blew the whistle.

"He said: 'what was that for?'

"I said: 'you took three touches!'

"'No I didn't!'

"He starts walking towards me and I said: 'Look, it's a free kick, you took three touches and it's not my fault if you're not skillful enough just to take two touches.

"I leaned back and he just caught me on the end of the chin.

"The two of us were going at it and they had to separate us and that's how seriously he took his football. Over a wee incident like that. That's how seriously he took his football."
