The Ally McCoist Rangers quip that made Graeme Souness go 'scarlet' with rage and need FOUR players to hold him back

Ally McCoist and Graeme Souness may be bosom buddies nowadays but there was a time when their relationship was rather more frosty.

The wise-cracking striker and intense player-manager had their ups and downs at Rangers over the years and it took Souness' departure to Liverpool for the striker to become a key payer once again after he was benched in favour of a Mo Johnston and Mark Hateley partnership.

And the chalk and cheese clash of personalties spectacularly came to a head at Celtic Park in 1988 after a Frank McAvennie double put the Hoops in pole position for a centenary year title.

Souness was furious with the team's performance and the output of his star striker in particular and McCoist jokingly recalled that the rage was so intense, he feared for his LIFE.

He said on talkSPORT: "I wish I had a pound for every time Graeme wanted to kill me and I do mean KILL me.

"There was a time when we were beaten by Celtic at Parkhead after Frank McAvennie scored two goals and Graeme was playing. He was player manager at the time.

"And he came in and I could see he was raging. Absolutely raging.

"He went through everybody and he started on me and he's got the finger right in my face.

"He said 'you were a disgrace, you were this, you were that, you were the next thing. You were the worst player on the park today'.

"And I could feel my wee teammate Ian Durrant nudge me to say 'shut up and don't say anything. Just take it' but I couldn't stop myself.

"I didn't open my mouth I just sat there shaking my head and of course he's got to come back to me.

"He said 'You're shaking your head?'

"I said 'That's right, I am shaking my head because I wasn't the worst player. YOU WERE!' and I pointed at him.

"Well, there was about four other players holding him back, he was going to kill me. I swear to god, his face went that scarlet way.

"He's trying to swing for me and I'm just sitting unlacing my boots 'lalalalalalala'(humming).

"As much as I love him, Graeme would have killed me in that dressing room if he had the opportunity."
