The all-time best FromSoftware games, including Dark Souls and Elden Ring

Today, we are going to be taking a look at my favorite game genre of all time! We are going to be focusing on the Souls-like games made by FromSoftware.

Below, you will see my top five games that have been made by FromSoftware. Keep in mind, that this is my list. Any of these games could be number one on another person’s list and I would be completely fine with that.

If you are wondering, no, I am not a Dark Souls 2 enjoyer. I would rather act as if that game never existed. These games have given me a roller coaster of emotions throughout my life and hold a special place in my heart.

5
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

This is not a knock on Sekiro AT ALL. This is just my personal opinion. I think Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is an incredible game. There is a reason that it is a Top 3 Souls game for a lot of people. FromSoftware strayed from the path of getting the biggest sword you could find and doing as much damage as possible to making it more about technique, and 17th-century Japan is such a beautiful setting as well.

4
Elden Ring

Again, not a knock on the game. Elden Ring was Game of the Year for a reason and it combines so many of the greatest aspects of other Souls games into a huge open world. Instead of the usual area grinding you have to do in these games, you can travel to an entirely different area to level up enough to fight the boss that just destroyed you.

The world is your oyster in Elden Ring. You can go wherever you want and there are side quests, mini-bosses, and dungeons with platforming that keep you on edge for well over 100 hours of gameplay. I can’t wait for the first DLC to dive back into the game.

Dark Souls

Dark Souls one is where it all began for me. I was just a kid who had no idea what a Souls game was. I had never played a game like it before. I had an Xbox 360 and I think that I got the game for free with Xbox Live.

I booted it up with no idea what I was getting myself into. If you have played the game, you know that it throws you in the fire quickly. You step into a building and boom, the Asylum Demon jumps down and it is a Welcome to Dark Souls moment.

Then I met Solaire of Astora, the character that I named all of my Souls characters after. I would later summon him to help me defeat the Bell Tower Gargoyles.

This game challenged me in ways that I had never been challenged before. It made me want to learn the ins and outs of the game and the lore behind it.

2
Bloodborne

Like Sekiro, Bloodborne provided its own spin on the normal Souls game mechanics. I started the game off with an axe and a pistol/blunderbuss. That’s right, you started the game with a gun in your left hand. You used the gun as a parry mechanic, which I think is brilliant.

I love the art style of the game. The Gothic style of buildings and locations and the styles of the enemies you faced. The boss fights were fun and fulfilling and “The Old Hunters” DLC is one of the best DLCs in all of the FromSoftware games.

I am still hoping for a Bloodborne 2 or even a remastered Bloodborne that has 60 FPS. I will likely be hoping and waiting forever.

1
Dark Souls 3

I will not even begin to try and calculate how many hours I have sunk into Dark Souls 3. I enjoy this game so much that I try to play through it at least once every year. I know the locations of a lot of the items and things like that in the game.

Dark Souls 3 has one of my favorite bosses in the series, The Nameless King. He soars into the boss fight on his dragon and in the first phase you are tasked with defeating the dragon while he is on the back attacking you. Once you defeat the dragon, the real fight begins.

I still love this game as much in 2024 as I did when it was initially released. It is my favorite game of all time, hence why it is No. 1 on this list.
