The Alfredo Morelos Rangers transfer boost for Andy Halliday as he urges Ibrox side to take advantage of Boli Bolingoli error

Andy Halliday insists Rangers will be much better off with the pressure taken off of Alfredo Morelos' shoulders with new signings.

The Colombian has been the Ibrox side's go to man over the last two seasons but Steven Gerrard has splashed the cash to bring in Cedric Itten and Kemar Roofe this summer.

He's also getting more goals from Ryan Kent and Joe Aribo while Ianis Hagi has looked threatening at times, although he's still waiting to really explode at the Ibrox club.

And Halliday reckons it's far better for Rangers title challenge that they don't need to completely rely on Morelos.

He told BBC Sportsound: "I was confident last season, but obviously we fell short

“We did rely too much on Alfredo to score goals, but the squad has been strengthened.

"Everyone knows he's a maniac, but as a team-mate, he is a joy. He is just full of carry on - always just trying to wind people up.

"But, when balls are kicked, it is 100% commitment. He's got his faults with the number of yellow cards, there is a discipline problem, but it is a fine line with Alfredo because a big ingredient to his success is that fire within him.

"He is a loveable character. I know a lot of the boys at Rangers appreciate him as a person and what he brings to the team."

The former Ibrox midfielder is still a free agent but is still keeping a close eye on his old team.

And he's urged them to grasp the chance handed to them by Boli Bolingoli's Spanish misadventure and pile pressure on Celtic.

Rangers could go 11 points clear before Celtic kick a ball again, and Halliday added: "Bolingoli's stupidity has given Rangers a huge opportunity to take advantage of the situation.

"This Celtic team have never been in a position to chase, so it will be interesting. They will have these games in hand, but everyone would agree you would rather have the points in the bag."
