The Alfredo Morelos message which Rangers No2 Gary McAllister hopes striker takes on board

Gary McAllister hopes the "penny is dropping" with Alfredo Morelos over his costly indiscipline after seeing the striker miss out on Colombia's Copa America squad.

The Rangers frontman has bagged 29 goals this season but will not be featuring for his national team this summer after boss Carlos Queiroz admitted he could not rely on a player who has been sent off five times this season.

McAllister said: "Alfredo has had an amazing season. He's a player who I think has got loads of potential and going down the line there's a top, top international footballer there.

"Just be patient, he'll be OK. We have to remember, he's still only 22 so he has plenty of time.

"Hopefully missing out is a lesson. He's a young man and he's got to be learning and taking everything on board.

"There's been a lot said about the fella. We try as a coaching staff to advise, senior players in the dressing room speak to him as well. Hopefully the penny is dropping - but he'll be fine."

Alfredo Morelos opens up on Colombia snub as Carlos Queiroz reveals why Rangers striker was axed

Gers round off their season at Kilmarnock on Sunday but are set to be without defender Jon Flanagan .

The former Liverpool full-back was given a yellow card after a clash with Scott Brown during last weekend's win over Celtic but is now set to sit out the Rugby Park trip after being cited by the SFA

But the decision has frustrated McAllister, who believes Hampden chiefs should accept referee Kevin Clancy's on-field call.

He said: "I agreed it was a yellow card. What the referee saw and gave, we were in support of that. That's how I saw it.

Jon Flanagan hearing delayed at Rangers’ request as full back’s 'case' put on hold

"I thought when you'd been given a yellow card, you couldn't be cited. We just backed the referee's decision on the day that it was a yellow.

"I don't want to comment on what happens at other clubs. The fact is Jon is our player, we just thought it was a coming together and what the ref gave we agreed with."
