The Alderley Edge bypass has become 'a river'

The A34 Alderley Edge bypass has become completely submerged in flood water.

A picture taken of the route this morning shows a section of the road completely covered by water at around 11am this morning.

The road has been sealed off in both directions while firefighters work to clear the water.

A car also can be seen - apparently floating-  in the water.

Rupert Cornford, who snapped a picture of the bypass as he cycled, said: "I heard that it had been shut but didn't know why.

"I thought that is absolutely huge. With the car being in the middle of it for perspective, it shows how deep it is.

"It looks really really deep at least 10ft in the middle.

"Rivers break their banks, but I haven't seen anything like that before."

Cheshire East Highways tweeted: "Due to heavy rainfall over the weekend, we are experiencing flooding in areas across Cheshire East.

"The A34, Alderley Edge is currently closed in both directions and the A6MARR is also closed due to flooding. Please allow extra travel time as congestion is expected."

Most of the flood warnings for Greater Manchester are no longer in force.

However a flood alert, meaning flooding is possible, remains in place for the River Bollin catchment area of Cheshire.

This includes Knutsford, Wilmslow, Macclesfield and Bollington.
