The alarming Alfredo Morelos and Steven Gerrard exchange Rangers fans noticed vs Bayer Leverkusen

Rangers fans noticed an alarming exchange between Alfredo Morelos and Steven Gerrard as the striker was subbed off against Bayer Leverkusen.

The Colombian forward endured a disappointing night as his side lost 1-0 to the German outfit (4-1 on aggregate) and were knocked out of the Europa League.

Overturning the first leg deficit was a tall order for Rangers, but it was Morelos' display that worried the supporters and specifically what happened as he was taken off.

Greg Stewart came on in his place during the second half in a double substitution as Nathan Patterson also replaced skipper James Tavernier.

As Tavernier walked off, Gerrard shook his captain's hand, but as Morelos walked by him, the Rangers boss did not even acknowledge him.

And eagle-eyed fans were quick to pick up on the exchange and believe it could turn out to be a telling moment between the manager and star player.

@BenHeath7 tweeted: "No handshake for Morelos when he came of"

Gerrard said after the game Morelos' "head has been turned" from the speculation surrounding his future as he continues to be linked with a move to Lille.

He told BT Sport: "Everyone knows he's had his head turned. For sure. There's no denying that.

"But we just move forward. My focus is on the team and the players that want to be here. My focus is certainly on St Mirren.

"If a bid comes that the board like and are interested in, and the player tells me face-to-face that he wants to go, then we'll see what happens."

When asked if Morelos' performances have been affected, Gerrard added: "I don't think so. I think Alfredo is professional enough to try and block the noise out and focus.

"He hasn't had the best of games tonight, but we haven't as a team either. There's certainly no blame on anyone.

"We've given it our best shot, but we've fallen short. We all have to improve. There's certainly no finger-pointing tonight on anyone's performance, but Alfredo needs to remain focused."
