WIGGO’S RACE DAY ...
Cycling’s Revolution series, which went from strength to strength last year with some of Britain’s top riders in action, begins again with a six-round season that opens in Derby (Friday to Sunday, tickets and details: cyclingrevolution.com). Bradley Wiggins brings Team Wiggins – a concept founded by the Modfather to prepare GB’s Team Pursuit riders for the Rio Games – to the event and he will compete in individual and team pursuit. The seven-day Eneco Tour of Belgium and the Netherlands also begins next week (from Monday, Eurosport), an intriguing mixture of lowlands, climbs, cobbles and a time-trial at the Dutch village Hoogerheide.

CUP KICK-OFF ...
The football season is up to full speed in a hurry, with the start of the league season rapidly followed by the Capital One Cup. The competition opens with Portsmouth v Derby County on Wednesday (Sky Sports 1, 7.45pm) – the former having had a fine run last year, making the fifth round before going out to eventual winners, Chelsea. That is followed by an all-Yorkshire clash, Doncaster v Leeds on Thursday (Sky Sports 1, 7.45pm). Elsewhere, the Bundesliga opens on Friday, with the champions, Bayern Munich, taking on Hamburg (BT Sport, 7.15pm).
