SUPER SEVENS ...

Stepping up to the big stage, sevens rugby will be an Olympic sport in Rio next year, giving more weight than ever to the Sevens World Series which begins in Dubai on Friday. ( Sky Sports 3, 4.50am). It is contested at 10 meetings around the world, with the final round at Twickenham in May. England, Wales and Scotland are all represented, from which teams players will be looking to make their mark to secure a place in the Team GB squad for the 2016 Games.

RIVALRY RESUMED ...

More Olympic form guides as Great Britain play their second pool game against Australia at the men’s Hockey World League finals in India (Sunday, BT Sport 2, 3pm). Australia top the world rankings but GB opened with a strong 3-1 win against Canada on Saturday. Two from each pool go through to the knockout stage, so another win would seal their spot. The final pool matches are on Tuesday from 1pm.

GONG SHOW ...

There’s a lack of gripping hands and eagle eyes but BT Sport should be applauded for sticking with their Action Woman of the Year awards for the third time, bringing the achievements of women in sport to the fore. Johanna Konta, Nicola Adams and Jessica Ennis-Hill are among the shortlist of 10 (Tuesday, BT Sport 1, 7.30pm).

FA CUP CLASH ...

Enjoying the limelight after a recent documentary and having seen off Notts County in the last round, non-league Salford City, part-owned by members of Manchester United’s Class of ’92, will have another giant-killing in mind for their second-round meeting with Hartlepool (Friday, BBC2, 7.55pm).
