The aftermath of Bournemouth beach 'major incident' as residents describe mayhem

Residents in Bournemouth have described 'mayhem' after a major incident was declared as thousands flocked to the beach.

Bournemouth Council made the call after services became "completely overstretched" as huge numbers of visitors defied advice to stay away on Thursday.

Bournemouth East MP Tobias Ellwood said 500,000 people had visited Dorset.

Pictures following the huge number of visitors shows litter mounting on the sandy beach and police and security were seen patrolling the beach on Friday morning.

Local resident Pat Munday, 73, described how cars were double-parking and blocking driveways, preventing emergency vehicles from getting through, while people were using the gardens of her apartment block as a toilet on Wednesday and Thursday.

"It was just mayhem, people just want to have a good time but they just don’t give a monkey's about others," she said.

"It's a shame, it's such a beautiful part of the country but people just need some control, people have lost all sense of respect – when they urinate in your garden, it's the pits."

Dorset Police have also launched an investigation after three men, all in their 20s, were also stabbed hours after the major incident was declared at the popular holiday resort.

All three were taken to hospital and their conditions are not described as life-threatening.

Detective Inspector Gavin House, who is leading the investigation, said: "We are carrying out a full and thorough investigation to determine who was responsible for this incident.

"The public can expect to see an increased police presence near to the pier today as detectives continue their inquiries in the area.

"I understand there was a large number of people on the beach at the time of the incident and I would urge anyone who may have important information to assist my investigation to please get in touch.

"I am keen to hear from anyone who may have video footage of the incident and would please ask that you do not post or share this online out of respect for the injured people."

Health Secretary Matt Hancock has since warned the government will take action if  coronavirus  social distancing measures are ignored.

Mr Hancock told TalkRadio the goverment had the power to close public areas like beaches if people flout safety restrictions.
