Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will become the first African player to captain Arsenal and the first non-European skipper for the Gunners, following Unai Emery's annoincement.
The decision to strip Granit Xhaka of the captaincy was confirmed during Arsenal's pre-match press conference ahead of Wednesday's Europa League clash with Vitoria in Portugal.
That came after Xhaka 's clash with Arsenal supporters during the recent 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace, where he was booed off the field and responded by swearing at the fans - which earned plenty of criticism from pundits and former players.
Emery had previously condemned Xhaka's actions but is still backing the Switzerland international to be a part of his plans, although he has missed the last two matches since the incident.
However, when he does next take to the field, Xhaka will not be wearing the armband - and instead Aubameyang will earn the additional accolade of being the first African to captain the Gunners.
While it is worth noting that Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira was born in Senegal, as his famous chant identifies, the former midfielder entered the record books as a France international - earning 107 caps during a 12-year career with Les Bleus.
As well as flying the flag for the African continent, Aubameyang also becomes the first non-European permanent captain of the North London side - and the 11th non-British skipper in a row since Tony Adams retired in 2002.
Since then, Vieira, Thierry Henry, William Gallas, Cesc Fabregas, Robin van Persie, Thomas Vermaelean, Mikel Arteta, Per Mertesacker, Laurent Koscielny and Xhaka have been captains for the Gunners.
