The actress playing Margaret Thatcher in The Crown has been announced

The X Files star, Gillian Anderson, will take on the role of Margaret Thatcher in series four of The Crown.

Anderson is best known for her role as FBI agent, Dana Scully in the popular nineties science fiction show and more recently she has wowed TV audiences as Stella Gibson in The Fall.

The fourth series of the smash Netflix show has just started filming and will tackle the era of the late 1970s and 1980s and will also feature Prince Charles and Diana, Princess of Wales' story.

Margaret Thatcher became Prime Minister in 1979 and remained so until 1990.  During her tenure , the people of Wales lived through the miners' strike, which saw the British coal industry decimated and communities pushed to the brink of despair.

The Crown returns to Netflix for series three on November 17. Series four will be released in 2020.
