The ACT has recorded another 142 COVID-19 cases in the 24 hours to 8pm on Christmas Eve.

It was the fourth consecutive day the territory has set a record daily increase, as the Omicron variant spreads rapidly across Australia.

ACT Health has not released a full breakdown of data - including numbers of patients in hospital and intensive care - due to Christmas.

As case numbers soared, added strain has been placed on the ACT's testing regime. Christmas morning waits for PCR tests exceeded two hours at sites in Kambah, Mitchell and Garran.

The federal government on Friday announced wait times for boosters would be slashed to four months from January 4, and three months from January 31.

Around Australia

Case numbers in NSW continued to mount, with Australia's largest state reporting 6288 new infections on Saturday. No NSW resident lost their life to the virus.

But hospitalisation and intensive care admissions were yet to follow the escalating caseload. There were 388 people in hospital across NSW, up from 382 on Christmas Eve, and 52 in intensive care.

It comes a day after mask mandates returned on Christmas Eve in an attempt to slow the spread of Omicron. Density limits - including in pubs, restaurants, and cafes - will return for at least a month from from December 27.

Victoria recorded another 2108 cases and eight COVID-19 deaths on Christmas Day. There were 71 active cases in intensive care and 42 patients requiring a ventilator.
