The Academy predicts Oscars win for Joaquin Phoenix in quickly deleted tweet

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences who look after the Oscars, has seemingly tweeted its own predictions as to who will win on Sunday.

The Academy launched a new interactive tool earlier this week that allows people to make their predictions for who will pick up a statuette.

They then tweeted who they thought would pick up an Oscar at the ceremony at Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles at the weekend.

The tweet was quickly deleted but it was enough to reveal that they are predicting a win for Joker star Joaquin Phoenix and that Sam Mendes film 1917 will be pipped to Best Picture by South Korean black comedy thriller Parasite.

Naturally, the tweet was met with a number of dissenters, with many questioning whether the Academy should be making 'predictions' about who will win when there may have some insight as to has actually won.

The voting for the Oscars was open until Tuesday but the tweet may have given an early indication as to who is in the box seat for a win.

The Academy has played down the significance of the predictions and has claimed that it was a 'glitch' which led to the tweet being posted.

In a statement, the Academy wrote: "We invited fans on Twitter to make and share your #Oscars predictions. A ton of you already have!

"A brief issue on Twitter made some of yours look like they came from our account. They didn't. This error is now resolved. We'll reveal our picks on Sunday."

Among the predictions, it had Sam Mendes for Best Director for 1917 and Jojo Rabbit for Best Adapted Screenplay.

There was also a nod to Joaquin Phoenix for Best Actor in Joker, Renée Zellweger for Best Actress in Judy and Brad Pitt for Best Supporting Actor in Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood.

Laura Dern is tipped to win Best Supporting Actress in Marriage Story.
