The absolutely brilliant reason why one Neil the baby from Gavin and Stacey can't be in the Christmas special

Filming of the much anticipated Gavin & Stacey 10-year-reunion Christmas special began

in Barry this weekend

- but there was at least one member of the cast mising.

And in this case there's sadly, but hilariously, a very good reason.

One of the many children who played Neil, the baby just can't get away with playing the part anymore. Because she's a girl.

A number of Welsh babies were recruited to play the role in the original sitcom

In the 2008 Christmas special one of them was Cari Kiernan.

Her mum Bethan Chamberlain from Swansea said: "She is in the scene in the Christmas special where baby Neil (Cari) is in the bouncer and Smithy is looking over her making her laugh.

"It was my husband who was standing behind her and making her laugh," said 40-year-old Bethan.

Bethan said Cari, who is now 11 years old, loves typing her name into Google and seeing herself on Gavin and Stacey.

"She watches them back all the time. She loves it."

Mum of four Bethan said she did not even realise how popular Gavin and Stacey was when she found out her six month old baby had been casted as Neil the baby.

"They wanted to get babies that were identical, and her and the other baby who was played by a little boy looked exactly the same.

"It was mad.

"I have recently seen a photo of him as he is now and they still look exactly the same."

Lewis Marchant played Neil at the same time that Cari did.

Bethan was told the production crew they went through photos of thousands of babies before they found the match in Cari and Lewis Marchant.

"We loved being on set, the cast were really good and so lovely to us.

"We would love for her to meet the cast again."

Bethan said they filmed the Christmas special in Cardiff even though the scenes were set in Essex.

She would love for Cari to meet the cast again, like Ewan Kennedy who was photographed with James Corden on Friday.

"It is such a great thing to be able to tell people. Everyone loves Gavin and Stacey," said Bethan.
