The 86-year-old doing 100 laps around her garden to raise money for meals on wheels service

An 86-year-old is hoping to raise money for a south Manchester meals on wheels service by doing 100 laps around her garden.

Dorothy Brown has been spending much of her week walking around her garden as part of a fund-raiser for Levenshulme Inspire’s Meal Buddies on Wheels project.

Dorothy, who has volunteered at the centre for a few years, said it was a much needed service that was crucial at a time like this.

Dorothy said: “They do such wonderful things.

“The Meals on Wheels service is so important. They are delivering food to vulnerable people to ensure they are well fed and looked after.”

Starting yesterday (April 29), Dorothy will do laps from her shed up to the end of her garden patio as many times as she can each day until she gets tired.

To keep track of her progress, Dorothy is marking down the number of laps she has done on a board.

In her first day, she managed to do 30 laps and has already raised more than £200.

Dorothy says the success of Captain Tom Moore, who walked a hundred lengths of his back garden to celebrate his 100th birthday while raising funds for the NHS, has been a huge inspiration for her.

“He’s just incredible, isn’t he? What he’s done is so great and I just thought that it was something I could do to help the local community.

“I won’t be able to raise money as much as he has, but I hope to raise enough to make a difference and keep them going during this time.”

Dorothy has been volunteering at Levenshulme Inspire for a number of years, in particular to their finance department.

Their Meal Buddies on Wheels service provides emergency food provision and distribution of approximately 500 healthy takeaway meals for older people and vulnerable people each week.

All meals are delivered by volunteers across Levenshulme, Gorton, Longsight and Burnage.

Earlier this month, the centre launched an appeal for donations to help them get through the pandemic.

Their ‘Bee Kind, Be Safe, Be Levy’ fundraiser is helping them pay for meals for older people and will also go towards the heat, lighting, and insurance costs of the building.
