The 8 Scotland stars walking World Cup playoff suspension tightrope against Denmark

Team selections are never straightforward for managers, especially at international level.

But Steve Clarke faces some of the toughest decisions he'll make as Scotland boss tomorrow night when he sends his starting XI onto the Hampden turf.

The Tartan Army are already booking time off in March 2022 after their nation secured a World Cup play-off spot for the first time since 1986.

Scotland's result against the Danes will go a long way to deciding whether they're heading to Mount Florida for a home tie as seeds or facing a much sterner test away from home against a seeded country.

Clarke's selection headache stems from FIFA's rule that any player picking up two bookings over the course of the group stage receives an automatic one game ban.

Clarke has already slated that rule, especially given Scotland played two games more than many countries due to being in a six team group, branding it "unfair".

Nevertheless, the former St Mirren and Chelsea defender has some massive calls to make given the calibre of player that could miss the crucial World Cup play-off semi-final should they pick up another booking against Denmark on Monday night.

He will have to decide whether to stick or twist on a number of key players, while also weighing up whether going all out for victory over unbeaten, runaway group winners Denmark to secure a home tie is worth running the risk of losing star players for March's play-off.

The eight players who are just one booking away from suspension, who have nearly 200 international appearances between them, are:

Andy Robertson: 53 caps, three goals.

John McGinn: 40 caps, 11 goals.

Billy Gilmour: Nine caps, no goals.

Ché Adams: 12 caps, three goals.

Jack Hendry: 12 caps, one goal.

Kevin Nisbet: 10 caps, one goal.

Scott McTominay: 28 caps, one goal.

Stephen O’Donnell: 23 caps, no goals.
