The 8 games that could define Jose Mourinho and Tottenham's season

It will be all go for Jose Mourinho and his Tottenham side once they return to league action on Sunday.

The Premier League winter break is currently taking place and that has seen a number of the squad jet off to warmer climates as they prepare for the final few months of the season.

It really is going to be all to play for between now and May as the Lilywhites are currently sixth in the table and four points behind Chelsea in fourth as they bid to clinch a Champions League place.

However, it's not just league football on the agenda as Europe's elite competition returns next week and the fifth round of the FA Cup takes place at the start of next month.

Jose Mourinho on Spurs' progress under him

February is always a crucial time in the campaign and the Spurs team will want to right the wrongs of this time last year.

Looking in a good position in the league as they sat just behind Man City and Liverpool, a late 2-1 defeat at Burnley sent the team on a downward spiral and they ended up tumbling down the league after failing to win in five league games.

Appearing certainties to seal a top-four place prior to their trip to Turf Moor, it was actually on the final day of the season when Mauricio Pochettino's team clinched their spot in the Champions League as Arsenal pushed them very close.

Mourinho and his side really cannot afford to go a run of five league games without a win this time as it will very probably mean that they will end up playing in the Europa League next campaign.

Still without Harry Kane and Moussa Sissoko through injury, the team have turned a corner of late and it is going to be so important to keep their form going over the next month.

It has not been all smooth sailing for the head coach since he took on the job from Pochettino in November and this next month is going to be his most testing period at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to date.

Returning to action on Sunday with an away trip to Villa Park as they take on Aston Villa, the team are then in action three days later in the first leg of their Champions League Round of 16 tie against RB Leipzig.

The big games then keep on coming for Spurs as they make the trip across the capital to face Chelsea.

Having closed to within four points of Frank Lampard's side after trailing them by 12 not so long ago, the Lilywhites could potentially leapfrog the Blues in the table depending on how the west London club do in their game against Manchester United next Monday evening.

There's a very good chance the match will have a big say in who secures Champions League football come May and it's imperative that Mourinho isn't on the losing side when he returns to his former home.

Spurs will then have home comforts in their following two games as both Wolves and Norwich City travel to N17.

The team have tended to do well on home soil since the head coach came in back in November and the clash against Wolves will certainly not be straightforward given they are also challenging for a European spot.

Tottenham also know that they cannot underestimate Norwich in the FA Cup as the Canaries ran them very close in the league fixture in north London not that long ago.

The Burnley defeat was a huge turning point in Spurs' season last year and it was the start of a disastrous run of results for Pochettino in 2019.

A trip to Turf Moor once again comes at a key point in the season and only a few days before the second leg of their vital Champions League tie against RB Leipzig.

The team's tough run of fixtures then comes to an end midway through March as Manchester United, who defeated them at Old Trafford in December, make their first ever trip to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Mourinho and his side really are going to be tested over the next month and how they fare over the next eight games will have a huge bearing on how the rest of the season pans out.

Progress beyond RB Leipzig and Norwich City in the Champions League and FA Cup respectively, as well as keeping themselves in contention for the top four, and then it could be a really exciting climax to the season for all involved.

February proved to be start of Spurs' downfall in 2019 and hopefully things will be a lot different for the Lilywhites 12 months on.
