The 8 areas of Bristol with the lowest levels of coronavirus

The numbers of new people catching coronavirus in Bristol and the surrounding area is slowly decreasing - and there are some areas of the region with only a handful of new cases.

The most recent figures from the Department of Health reveal that there are eight areas of the city and nearby North Somerset with coronavirus case rates below 100 cases per 100,000.

Much of Bristol, South Gloucestershire, North East Somerset and North Somerset still has high levels of covid-19 cases, with case rates in individual areas still between 100 and 400, and more than a dozen areas where the case rate is worryingly high - over 400.

Yesterday, Bristol Live revealed that Brislington in south Bristol had the third highest coronavirus case rate in England, and the updated figures overnight have shown it's increased again.

But while cases in Brislington are being diagnosed at a rate of ten a day, there are some places in other parts of the city where fewer than ten a week are being found.

There are even some with so few coronavirus cases being found that the Government's official tally doesn't record them.

The Government's statistics people divide up the entire country into what are known as Middle Super-Output Areas (MSOAs). Each has a population of between 5,000 and 10,000, with a rought average of about 7,200 in each MSOA. In cities, that could be half a big suburb, in more rural areas, it could be two or three villages over a large area combined. Because each MSOA has a different number of people living in them, the Department of Health also provides a 'case rate', which averages out each area to compare equally per population.

In the Bristol region, the overall case rate for the city and for the neighbouring unitary authorities often hides huge differences in the number of new cases in the past week. The most recent figures overnight are for the seven days to last Wednesday, January 27 - as the fourth week of the most recent January lockdown began.

The following list is all the areas of Bristol and its surrounding communities which have a coronavirus case rate below 100. Each area is listed, then the number of actual cases found in the seven days to January 27, with the case rate in brackets.
