The £70million Allan Saint-Maximin report which sums up Newcastle's transfer dilemma

Newcastle are being linked with a move for Hamza Choudhury - with claims the club have placed a £70million price tag on Allan Saint-Maximin.

Leicester midfielder Choudhury was on Steve Bruce's wishlist in January and it's inevitable that he will return for the England under-21 player if the price is right.

Bruce will go into talks with the United hierarchy bidding to secure more transfer funds - with some suggesting he could even walk away if he is starved of a budget.

The Newcastle manager made the case successfully last summer for more funds but knows he needs to improve the squad to avoid another fight against relegation.

The Mail claims Newcastle wouldn't listen to offers under £70million for the French maverick as they pitch United's transfer budget at just £12million.

Saint-Maximin is the man who could fund a revamp of the squad but his departure would significantly weaken United - for whom he is undoubtedly the talisman. He has, however, only played 49% of available minutes this season.

If a team was willing to pay £70million, it would make it one of the top 20 transfer fees paid out in history which, during a pandemic with revenues crunched, seems unlikely.

The report claims moves for Kristoffer Ajer, the Celtic defender, and Kyle Joseph of Wigan are both in the pipeline.
