The 6 teams Chelsea will have to beat to complete Sergio Aguero transfer

Sergio Aguero is likely to have his pick of clubs between now and the start of the 2021/22 season.

The frontman, who is the fourth highest goalscorer in Premier League history - just seven shy of being third on that list outright - is to leave Manchester City at the end of this season when his current contract expires.

Aguero will be 33 before the new season starts, but he has proven he is more than capable of finding the back of the net still, despite a season beset by injuries.

The striker netted 23 goals in 32 appearances for City last season and it would be foolish to think that a season marred by injuries has affected his goalscoring ability.

Chelsea are in the market for a new striker this summer, with Aguero reported to be one of the names on their list as the Blues monitored his contract situation.

Now that situation has been resolved, it remains to be seen whether or not Thomas Tuchel is prepared to make the Argentine his first signing in west London.

Chelsea were interested in Aguero way back in 2010, before he joined City, with Aguero hinting that he would like a move to London.

He said back then: "Chelsea are a great club. They have become one of the most feared in Europe over recent years. London would be a really amazing city to live in as well – myself and my wife could be really happy there."

But if Chelsea do want to sign him, they will face competition from six other clubs, according to bookmakers Betfair.

Barcelona are the favourites for his signature, which would mean him joining up with compatriot Lionel Messi, if indeed Messi stays at the Camp Nou.

And La Liga rivals Real Madrid are second favourites at 5/2.

Juventus, Independiente, PSG and Manchetser United are also in the running, alongside Chelsea, who are 16/1 to sign him.

Betfair spokesman Sam Ramsbottom said: "We make Barcelona the even money favourites to sign him. It looks as though a move back to Spain for the Argentine is on the cards, as Real Madrid are also in the running as second favourites at 5/2. A stay in the Premier League looks unlikely with Chelsea 16/1 and next door neighbours Man United 20/1 to sign the record goalscorer.

"Although Man City haven’t predominantly played with a recognised striker this season, punters are expecting City to splash the cash in the summer on a big name signing to replace him, with Erling Haaland the 7/4 favourite to take Aguero’s crown. The club have also been linked with Lionel Messi who is now 10/3 to move to Manchester to re-join Guardiola, while Harry Kane is 7/2 to move up north."
