The 5G and 'covid is a hoax' conspiracy theory banners on display at an anti-lockdown protest in Cardiff

Crowds of people gathered outside the Senedd on Sunday to protest against masks, lockdown, vaccinations and 5G.

Campaigners were seen carrying signs with messages such as "covid is a hoax" and "freedom from tyranny" at the Cardiff event attended by Jeremy Corbyn's brother Piers.

Another sign read "herd immunity needed" while another compared coronavirus measures against singing and dancing to the rules imposed by the Taliban.

Photos appear to show none of the campaigners wearing masks, with one protestor wearing a T-shirt with a slogan reading "2020 project fear, fight the lies".

South Wales Police officers were seen in attendance speaking to some of the people at the event.

Cardiff is currently one of a number of areas currently under local lockdown in Wales. It means that people cannot enter or leave the county without a reasonable excuse such as for work or to give care.

Welsh Government rules also state that people are not allowed to gather outdoors in groups of more than 30.

During the protest the brother of the former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn appeared on the steps of the Welsh Parliament wielding a microphone in front of a poster proclaiming: "End all Covid Vax" and "Take down 5G".

He has previously made unfounded links between the super-fast internet technology and Covid-19, calling the pandemic a "pack of lies to brainwash you and keep you in order".

Posting on Twitter before the protest, Mr Corbyn said police had warned he could be arrested if he travelled to Cardiff, saying: "I'm going. DEFY THEM! GO in huge numbers #FreeCardiff#".

There is no evidence to link 5G and Covid-19 and scientists fear that a rise in measles among children can be attributed in part to unfounded fears about vaccines.

Conspiracy theorists have made baseless claims the burgeoning 5G super-fast internet network is behind the coronavirus outbreak and that towers could emit dangerous radiation in a misinformation campaign that has seen some towers vandalised.

Vaccines are the most effective way to prevent infectious disease and have virtually eradicated smallpox, polio and tetanus in the UK, the NHS says.

But if people stop getting vaccinated then diseases can quickly spread again, it said.
