General election 2019: How to register to vote

Will any of Liverpool's schools be closed on polling day?

It it is not required that a school shuts while acting as a polling station - and so far the indications are that the vast majority of schools will stay open.

Here are the schools that have so far announced that they will be completely closed on polling day.

  • Abbots Lea Primary
  • Dovedale Primary
  • Whitefield Primary
  • St. Cuthbert’s Primary

What happens if my child's school is closed?

If your child's school is closed, the school will contact all parents to inform them.

For many parents, this can lead to disruption to work or other commitments, particularly as other facilities like children's centres can also be closed on election day in order to provide polling places.

Closing schools on election days is common, and the main piece of guidance schools are given is that they have to make up that lost day of education somewhere else in the academic year.

Why are so many schools used as polling stations?

In order to make sure that everyone can vote as easily as possible, local authorities try to pick locations with high levels of accessibility as polling stations.

Given laws around accessibility, this often means that schools, leisure centres and other public buildings offer the best location in a given area to act as a polling station.

In addition, because the vast majority of the buildings are owned by the council , there tend to be far fewer external costs because the council does not have to rent the building from a private body.
