More than 50 Newcastle schools have confirmed that they have now reopened for some pupils, or will later this week, after a lifting of lockdown restrictions.
The majority of primary schools in the city are welcoming larger groups of children back to class this week, with most choosing to bring back year six pupils first.
As of the evening of Monday June 8, 53 of the 72 primary or first schools in the city had either reopened or had definitive plans to reopen at some point this week.
The government had allowed schools to reopen to nursery, reception, year one, and year six children from June 1.
But North East councils promised that schools in the region would only reopen when they felt it was safe to do so, following concerns from parents and teaching unions over the impact of sending children back to school while other lockdown measures to control the spread of coronavirus are still in place.
Newcastle schools are expected to reopen gradually to those year groups that are allowed to return, with most choosing to start with the oldest pupils.
Newcastle City Council has also told parents that they are under no obligation to send their children back to school if they do not feel comfortable yet – and will not face fines for their children being kept at home.
All schools in the city remain open for vulnerable children, children of key workers and children with an Education, Health and Care Plan.
The below Newcastle primary or first schools confirmed they opened for some pupils on June 8, or would do so later this week.
However, Newcastle City Council said that just because a school is not yet on this list does not necessarily mean it will not be opening this week.
