The 5 Arsenal players Arsene Wenger could target as Bayern Munich boss

It looks increasingly likely that Arsene Wenger is going to be the new Bayern Munich manager.

Niko Kovac was sacked by the Bavarian giants following a dismal 5-1 defeat at the hands of Eintracht Frankfurt at the weekend - the club's worst result in a decade.

Bayern are fourth in the Bundesliga after ten games - four points behind leaders Borussia Moenchengladbach.

And according to SportBild, former Arsenal boss Wenger is the "absolute favourite" for the job.

Wenger has been out of the dugout since leaving Arsenal at the end of the 2017/18 season, but has been working as a television pundit, mainly for BeIn Sports.

He has made no secret of his desire to get back into the managerial hotseat, but when the right opportunity came along, and Bayern, one of Europe's big powerhouses, presents that opportunity.

If he does take the job, will Wenger be busy in the January transfer window, which is just around the corner?

Here we take a look at the players he could target from his old club...

Mesut Ozil

The obvious choice.

The German has been much-maligned at Arsenal under Unai Emery and has struggled to work his way into the new head coach's plans.

He has just returned to the first team fold, but Emery would be inclined to let him leave if a good offer came in.

Ozil has admitted he is happy in north London, but a big offer from the German giants could sway him to make the move to join up with the manager who signed him at Arsenal and was at the heart of offering him tat big contract at the Emirates.

Granit Xhaka

The Swiss does not seem to have a future at the Emirates.

He sulked when he was hooked during the Crystal Palace match and angered supporters with his reaction to their booing, cupping his hand to the crowd and pulling off his shirt before heading straight down the tunnel.

It was not becoming of an Arsenal captain.

He has since been stripped of the captain's armband and it looks as if his Arsenal career is coming to an end.

Arsene Wenger and Bayern could be the get out opportunity he needs.

Bernd Leno

Another German who could make a move back to his homeland.

Manuel Neuer is the first choice at the Allianz Arena and for the German national team, but he is not getting any younger.

He has had his injuries of late and at 33 years old will need to be replaced at some stage.

Leno appears to be the heir to Neuer's throne and has shone for Arsenal since he arrived in north London, with his saves stats coming to the fore already this season.

Would a bid from Bayern be too good for Leno to turn down?

Sead Kolasinac

The Bosnian defender was one of Wenger's last signings at Arsenal, joining on a free transfer from Schalke.

And he was pretty much the first choice left wing-back in Wenger's final season at the Emirates, playing 27 Premier League games.

Bayern are not exactly blessed in the full-back departments and Kolasinac would offer much-needed back-up should Wenger look to add to his squad in January.

With Kieran Tierney arriving at Arsenal in the summer, Kolasinac could find opportunities harder to come by in north London this season under Emery.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

The one Arsenal fans would really be loathe to see happen.

Aubameyang has less than two years left on his current contract at Arsenal and despite contract talks being ongoing, there has not been a breakthrough as yet.

The Gabonese forward craves Champions League football, something the Gunners have not been able to offer him since he joined the club in January 2018.

Thomas Muller could leave Bayern this January, with talk of a move to the Premier League, and Robert Lewandowski would be left as the sole recognised frontman.

It is an area that needs strengthening and Aubameyang knows the Bundesliga well.
