The £48m windfall to boost Frank Lampard's summer transfer budget at Chelsea

Chelsea are poised to receive £48million from Spanish club Atletico Madrid for the sale of striker Alvaro Morata at the start of July, a report by Marca, via Sports Mole, claims.

After joining the Stamford Bridge club from Real Madrid in July 2017 - signing for a fee somewhere in the region of £60million - Morata enjoyed a steady first season in English football, scoring 15 goals in all competitions.

But following the Blues' decision to appoint Maurizio Sarri as their new manager ahead of the 2018/19 campaign, Morta's game-time began to become slightly more limited, though he was still featuring on a consistent basis, but more often from the bench.

However, unhappiness in London meant he returned to the Spanish capital in January 2019, joining Real Madrid's cross-city rivals Atletico on an 18-month loan deal, which was due to expire in the coming weeks.

But after making a strong impression during his first few months at the Wanda Metropolitano, Atletico made the decision to sign Morta on a permanent deal last summer - a deal that will be made official once his loan deal expires next month.

And with Atletico having agreed to sign Morata, who has previously spent two years at Juventus, before the coronavirus crisis arrived, it means Chelsea could be set to inherit a tidy sum of money at just the right time.

Atletico, who knocked reigning Champions of Europe, Liverpool, out of the UEFA Champions League back in March, have an obligation to sign Morata for £48million - a sum of money that could go a long way in helping Chelsea head coach Frank Lampard in making changes to his squad ahead of the 2020/21 season.

The Blues are keen on adding a left-back to their ranks this summer, with the likes of Ben Chilwell of Leicester City and Porto's Alex Telles being heavily linked with a move to Stamford Bridge, as well as Borussia Dortmund starlet Jadon Sancho, who continues to be linked with a return to the Premier League after an outstanding season in Germany.

This season, however, Morata has struggled for consistency in front of goal, scoring just 12 times in 37 appearances in all competitions.
