Four players Gareth Southgate will promote to England seniors after Nations League loss

Joe Gomez, Jack Grealish, James Maddison and Harry Winks are all expected to be given the chance to shine in Southgate's new-look team as the England manager prepares to mix things up in his squad.

The Three Lions followed on from their World Cup 2018 heartbreak by losing another semi-final after they were defeated 3-1 by Netherlands in the Nations League.

Liverpool's Gomez has already won six caps for his country but after a season which was disrupted by injury he was an unused substitute against Holland.

Nevertheless, Southgate sees him as a long-term permanent fixture in the starting 11, and he could soon start ahead of Kyle Walker at right-back, with the Manchester City man struggling for form.

Southgate is also known to be a big fan of Aston Villa's Grealish. The 23-year-old was a hugely important figure during Villa's Championship campaign which eventually saw them promoted to the Premier League.

With Grealish finally set to test himself in England's top tier, Southgate believes he will soon be ready to feature for the Three Lions.

Maddison won no shortage of admirers after a brilliant 2018-2019 campaign for Leicester City. He could yet move on in the summer, and has been linked with Manchester United and Liverpool , but whatever happens he will surely win his first England cap sooner rather than later.

Winks, like Gomez, had a frustratingly stop-start season due to injury, and was left out of the Nations League squad altogether after he was deemed not fit enough to feature, despite the fact he started for Tottenham in their Champions League final against Liverpool.

Nevertheless, he has been handed three caps by Southgate in the past, and many see him as an important part of the team going into the future.

England's next match is against Switzerland in the Nations League third-place playoff on Sunday before they host Bulgaria and Kosovo in Euro 2020 qualifiers in September.
