The 39 Steps, a hilarious stage adaptation of John Buchan’s classic novel and Alfred Hitchcock’s 1935 film, will open in Adelaide. With the recent closing of London’s West End production, Jon Halpin’s new production is a timely welcome to Australia.
The story follows debonair Richard Hannay, who is pulled into a web of intrigue and deceit after a vaudeville show in London. He’s pursued by a shadowy organisation through the UK, entranced by the quintessential femme fatales, and must solve the mystery of the 39 steps before it’s too late.
It was the first trademark Hitchcock movie with an innocent man on the run in a double chase. In the stage show, originally adapted by British comedic genius Patrick Barlow, four actors, including Charles Mayer and Tim Overton, play 135 roles over 100 minutes. The Australian cast will take on the same theatrical challenge.
