The 32 out of 33 improvements which show Everton's progress under Marco Silva

Everton's progress under Marco Silva has been highlighted in a detailed performance chart - which shows the Blues performing better in 32 out of 33 different areas, in the season just ended compared to the previous campaign.

And one of the most startling changes shows that the Blues are no longer taking "knives to gunfights" against the top six sides.

Leading Everton statistican Bradley Cates, who posts under the pseudonym EFC Statto, has compared Everton's performances in 2018/19 to the previous season, using a wide range of performance metrics.

And the only category in which Everton have not outperformed their 2017/18 numbers is in drawn matches.

Shots per game, shots on target, possession, successful forward passes and action in attacking third are all improved on 2017/18.

But it is in their performances and attitude against the top six sides that Marco Silva has produced the most sizeable leap.

In 2017/18 Everton collected just four points against the top six teams - draws at Liverpool and Manchester City, and goalless home draws against Chelsea and Liverpool.

This season the Blues have collected 12 points from top six matches, including victories over Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United, a draw at Chelsea, a home draw against Liverpool and the final day draw at Tottenham Hotspur.

But even more importantly Everton have achieved those results with a positive mindset.

Everton have improved  their "shots against the top six" average by four efforts a match - and they are not just hopeful long range potshots, a significant 3.4 of those efforts have been on target.

And that attacking intent has not sacrificed defensive resilience. The Blues have faced an average of  -6.6 shots per game against the top six sides.

Everton's final Premier League placing of eighth is identical to last season's, but in so many other areas the Blues have improved statistically and aesthetically.

Everton are a football team worth watching again.
