The 3 neighbourhoods in Leeds where no one has died of coronavirus

More than 600 people across Leeds have lost their lives to coronavirus in hospitals and care homes since the start of the pandemic.

The UK death toll now stands at more than 45,000, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), and although the numbers are falling from the peak of the virus, the threat of Covid-19 still lingers.

However, there are some small rays of light to be taken from recently released data, which show that three neighbourhoods in Leeds did not record a single coronavirus death in the first three months of the pandemic.

The ONS figures, which cover all Covid-19 deaths in March, April and May, show that there have been no victims in Leeds city centre, Bramley Fall or Swarcliffe.

There seems to be no obvious explanation for these areas to have recorded no deaths until the start of June. One of the areas is in west Leeds, while another is centred around an estate on the Outer Ring Road in east Leeds.

Although it is good news for those three communities, the figures are less reassuring for other areas of the city.

Colton, Austhorpe and Whitkirk is just a couple of miles from Swarcliffe, but it recorded the most deaths anywhere in Leeds with 32 people passing away with Covid.

What's more, Swarcliffe also borders Seacroft North and Monkswood, which was the second worst affected area in Leeds after recording 25 deaths up to May 31.

Roundhay Park and Slaid Hill (19), Moortown (17) and Lady Wood and Oakwood (15) were also among the pockets of Leeds hit hardest by Covid-19.
