The 3 Aston Villa players set to miss Crystal Palace game as Dean Smith faces selection headache

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith admits he has some selection headaches ahead of the game against Crystal Palace this weekend.

However, he is likely to be without three players for the trip to Selhurst Park .

Villa visit south London on Saturday for a 3pm kick off, with Smith's men buoyed by two wins on the bounce; a 2-0 success at home against Everton last Friday in the Premier League and a 6-1 win at Gresty Road against Crewe Alexandra in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night.

However, the win at Crewe came at a cost, with full-back Matt Targett picking up a hamstring injury after playing a ball down the flank for Anwar El Ghazi.

As a result, the former Southampton defender is likely to be out until after the upcoming international break, with Targett ruled out of the clash at Selhurst Park this weekend.

He joins James Chester and Jonathan Kodjia on the injury list for Villa, with Chester having not yet featured this season after picking up a hamstring problem in pre-season against Shrewsbury Town.

Like Targett, the former Hull City defender is not expected to be fit until after the international break.

Meanwhile, Kodjia has not featured since the opening day, after rolling his ankle during the latter stages of the opening game against Tottenham.

He has stepped up his recovery this week in training, but is not expected to feature against the Eagles .

But Smith has said that he has been given food for thought by his players when it comes to his team selection, following their 6-1 victory against Crewe Alexandra in the Carabao Cup.

"We can make ten changes and go to Crewe [Alexandra] and win 6-1 [in the Carabao Cup] and a number of players played well," the Villa boss said.

"Conor Hourihane scoring two goals, Henri Lansbury assisting in three, Jota playing in that game as well, Keinan Davis leading the line superbly, and Jed Steer back in goal as well.

"So there's an awful lot of players who are pushing, and it only enhances the training sessions at the moment, and it makes it difficult for me, but that's how I want it to be."
