The £25m Newcastle United 'transfer target' which Magpies legend questions

Newcastle United should be wary of meeting Wolfsburg's reported £25m asking price for Netherlands striker Wout Weghorst.

That's the view of Magpies legend Steve Howey, who has questioned whether the 28-year-old would be capable of making the step up in the Premier League.

United were linked with a move for Weghorst last summer before opting to sign Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson.

The England international finished the season as the Magpies top scorer, netting 12 times during an injury-hit debut campaign at St James' Park.

However, Steve Bruce's side struggled for goals in the absence of Wilson and Allan Saint-Maximin, and attacking targets have been reported despite the expectation of a limited budget this summer.

Weghorst finished the most recent campaign as the Bundesliga's fourth top scorer with 20 goals, and the Athletic report he is interesting Tottenham and West Ham as well as the Magpies.

The former AZ Alkmaar striker featured in the Netherlands' opening two group fixtures at Euro 2020, and is likely to return to the starting eleven for their round-of-16 tie against the Czech Republic on Sunday.

Howey accepts Weghorst enjoyed a 'very strong season' with Wolfsburg, but does not believe that form will easily translate to the Premier League.

The ex-United defender has also warned his former side from being swayed by the striker's displays on international duty this summer.

He told Transfer Tavern : “I don’t know how many times we‘ve watched the Euros or we’ve watched the World Cup and there’s somebody that’s all of a sudden banged in a few goals and his price tag goes all the way up, and then somebody buys him and he comes in the Premier League and just doesn’t do it.

“There’s been loads of players that’s happened with. Obviously he’s had a very strong season in the Bundesliga and it’s a tough league, but it’s not the Premier League

“So, again, you’ve got to weigh everything up to think, ‘Well, are we getting the right person for the right money?’"
