The 24 times genuine musical heroes played unlikely Edinburgh venues down the years

There's certainly a school of thought out there which suggests Glasgow gets all of Scotland's best gigs.

And in some ways that thought holds some weight.

With venues such as the Barrowlands, the 02 Academy and, of course, the SSE Hydro, most bands or acts who are not quite big enough to pack out a stadium look to those venues when planning out a Scottish show.

We've all heard people say that they wish their favourite bands would spend more time visiting the capital than our biggest city.

However, despite the frustrations, it would be wrong to ignore the fact that Edinburgh does have an incredibly rich musical heritage of its own (in your face, Glasgow).

Some of the biggest names in history have taken to the stage at various venues across Edinburgh down the years – mostly before they've made it big.

So it seems that the key to catching your favourite band live in Edinburgh is knowing that they are going to be your favourite band around five years in advance.

One of the biggest bands of the last decade, the Arctic Monkeys, performed at the Subway in Cowgate in May 2005 before taking to the stage at The Exchange a few months later – just as they were beginning to break through.

Their debut album Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not would be released the following year, and went on to achieve massive success. Some incredible footage from their Cowgate gig can be seen below.

Yes, we know we're pushing it a bit to suggest that Edinburgh's Playhouse is an "unlikely venue" but Queen played there – and the idea of that is probably quite unlikely these days.

The gigs took place in 1976 – arguably when the band were at their peak.

It came a year after the release of the famous A Night at the Opera album which features Bohemian Rhapsody and You're My Best Friend – and just a few months before A Day at the Races came out, with hit single Somebody to Love.

The old Odeon Theatre in the city was also a hugely popular venue throughout the 1970s with a number of big names performing there.

Paul McCartney and Wings took to the stage there in May 1973 before Blondie performed in September 1978 and Elton John entertained an audience around six months later.

Huge acts such as U2, Bruce Springsteen, The Smiths and REM visited the city throughout the 1980s – before Nirvana played some famous gigs in the early 90s.

A famous gig at The Southern Bar in 1991 was organised as a benefit show for the Sick Kids, and two shows at the old Calton Studios also took place in 1990 and 1991.

Notorious rivals Oasis and Blur both played in the city in the middle of the decade – just as the Britpop scene was beginning to gather momentum.

As the year 2000 arrived former Nirvana man Dave Grohl returned with his new band the Foo Fighters, before The Strokes and The Libertines performed as they were beginning to hit the big time.

We've gone back 55 years in all and gathered together 24 of Edinburgh's most unlikely gigs – from the Arctic Monkey's gig at the Subway in Cowgate to Queen at the Playhouse.

And before anything says anything, yes we did include a Livingston show – but it was too incredible not to.

Not only were many of these shows incredible simply for the fact that they happened – but ticket prices were also extremely cheap.
