It was always going to be difficult to top the 2019 Met Gala’s Notes on Camp theme, which saw the likes of Lady Gaga perform dramatic costume changes on the pink carpet and Cardi B haul a showstopping Thom Brown gown up the stairs.
2020 will mark the Met’s 150th anniversary and the theme for the star-studded fundraiser has just been announced, as well as its co-chairs which include Meryl Streep.
The Met Gala’s theme is always centred around the exhibition held at the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Curator Andrew Bolton confirmed 2020's theme would be “About Time: Fashion and Duration” in a New York Times article published today, revealing it was inspired partly by Virginia Woolf’s novels as well as French philosopher Henri Bergson’s theories on time.
The 2020 gala will be held on May 4 will co-chairs including preeminent host Anna Wintour, Hamilton’s Lin-Manuel Miranda, Louis Vuitton’s Artistic Director Nicolas Ghesquiere, Vuitton brand ambassador Emma Stone as well as Meryl Streep - who will be attending the gala for the very first time.
Co-chairs for the 2019 Met Gala included Harry Styles, Gucci's Alessandro Michele, Lady Gaga, Serena Williams and of course Anna Wintour.
The exhibit could prove as a starting point for any celebrities looking for outfit inspiration, as the New York Times reported that the exhibition will chart the history of womenswear from 1870 onwards.
Bolton said, “Fashion is indelibly connected to time. It not only reflects and represents the spirit of the times, but it also changes and develops with the times.”
The show is set to open on May 7.
