The 2019 Newcastle United songbook of favourite terrace chants old and new

Newcastle fans are renowned for their creative chants and the Toon Army are heralded as one of the best groups of supporters in the country.

ChronicleLive is building a songbook of favourite Newcastle United chants, old and new, but we need your help.

Are there any songs you would like to hear again in the stands? Or which of those described below are your favourites?

To get things going, here are some newer chants and some classics. This is by no means a full list, but we plan on updating it as we go.

Some of the following examples do contain some strong language. But you probably knew that.

Miguel Almiron

Newcastle United's January 2019 signing took very little time to become a fan favourite at Newcastle. So much so, that the Toon Army have created two chants for the Paraguay international.

The first is pretty simple. It is to the tune of KC and the Sunshine Band's 'Give it Up'

Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, now
Miguel Almiron

The second is a tad more creative, invented while Rafa Benitez was manager but since then reworded. It's a variation on Whigfield's 'Saturday Night'.

He comes from Paraguay and he’s f*****g dynamite

It hasn't taken Toon fans long to create a chant for Miguel Almiron...

Sean and Matty Longstaff

We all love a local lad doing well at Newcastle and the Longstaffs have established themselves as firm fan favourites.

Magpies fans have created two chants for their local heroes. The first one is quite simple:

He's one of our own

He's one of our own

The second is an adaptation on an old chant Magpies fans had for Joey Barton, and is now being used for both the Longstaff brothers.

To the tune of 'Brimful of Asha', it goes like this:

Everyone needs a Geordie in the middle, everyone needs a Geordie

Everyone needs a Geordie in the middle, everyone needs a Geordie

His name's Sean/Matty Longstaff and he loves the Toon

His name's Sean/Matty Longstaf and he loves the Toon

Fabian Schar

After the Swiss defender scored a screamer against Burnley back in February, the Gallowgate End adorned him with this number, adapted from Joy Division's classic 'Love Will Tear You Apart'.

Schar will tear you apart again

DeAndre Yedlin

Magpies fans came up with this catchy number in reference to Yedlin's previous loan spell at rivals Sunderland. It's to the tune of the title track for former ITV show Heartbeat.

He was a Mackem, now he's a Geordie

He was a Mackem, now he's a Geordie

Jonjo Shelvey

To the tune of 'Ain't Nobody' by Chaka Khan, this one is nice and simple:

Ain't nobody

Jonjo Shelvey

Makes me happy

Makes me feel this way

A fresh dig at the lot down the road

In 2016, Sunderland fans took great joy in Newcastle’s relegation to the Championship. Three years on, with the Black Cats in the third tier, Newcastle fans have not forgotten.

You laughed at us

When we went down

But who the **** is laughing now?

The only logical choice for Christian Atsu

Newcastle’s Ghanaian winger’s ditty is belted out to the tune of ‘Logical Song’ by Supertramp... or Scooter, depending on your age/point of view. There’s usually a bit of jumping up and down, too.

Ohhh Christian Atsu oh he is so wonderful

When he scores a goal,

Oh it’s beautiful, magical.

When he runs down the wing he’s as fast as lightning

It’s frightening,

And he makes all the boys sing!

De De De De De De De De De De De.

Blaydon Races is Newcastle’s anthem. Fans tend to sing the first verse and chorus, although some swap “Collingwood Street” for “Scotswood Road” in the first verse, which is controversial among the old guard. Other lyrics can vary too.

Here is a traditional version of the song:

Ah went to Blaydon Races, ‘twas on the ninth of Joon,

In eighteen hundred an’ sixty-two, on a summer’s afternoon;

Ah tyuk the ‘bus frae Balmbras, an’ she wis heavy laden,

Away we went alang Collingwood Street, that’s on the road to Blaydon.

Chorus

Ah me lads, ye shud only seen us gannin’,

We pass’d the foaks upon the road just as they wor stannin’;

Thor wes lots o’ lads an’ lasses there, all wi’ smiling faces,

Ganning alang the Scotswood Road, to see the Blaydon Races.

We are the Geordies

This is another one you’ll hear at most matches.

We are the Geordies

The Geordie boot boys

For we are mental

We are mad,

We’re the loudest/loyalest football supporters,

The world has ever had...

“United”

Another song which has been adapted, is the simple “United, United, United”.

Recently, some supporters have started singing “Toon” in between each “United”. Again, on social media at least, there seems to be a section of the support who would rather stick with the earlier version.

Newcastle, Newcastle, Newcastle

This one is pretty self-explanatory:

Newcastle, Newcastle, Newcastle

Newcastle, Newcastle, Newcastle

Newcastle, Newcastle, Newcastle

To the tune of Depeche Mode's 'I just can't get enough':

Nolan put one in the mackems' net

I just can't get enough, I just can't get enough

Nolan put two in the mackems' net

I just can't get enough, I just can't get enough

Nolan put three in the mackems' net

And I just can't seem to get enough, oh, de de dede de de de.

And the even simpler

4-1, even Chopra scored, 4-1.
