The 2019 decision that spells bad news for Man City's Champions League ban appeal

Manchester City have been handed a two-year Champions League ban by UEFA after a breach of the governing body's financial fair play rule.

The reigning Premier League champions have been found to have seriously misled the organisation about the reported revenues from sponsorship deals.

Pep Guardiola's side have also been handed a £30 million fine, but have insisted that they will appeal the decision with the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Should the decision stand, it will serve as a boost to Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham's hopes of qualifying for the Champions League next season, with fifth place qualifying for the competition.

A similar story happened to Italian side AC Milan, who were thrown out of the Europa League for the current season after breaching the FFP rules themselves.

Milan's ban meant AS Roma, who came sixth in the standings, moved up to the Europa League group stage while their place in the qualifying rounds was taken by seventh-placed Torino.

However, AC Milan appealed the ban with the CAS overturning the decision. Uefa were told that the punishment was not proportionate and that the adjudicatory chamber had not properly assessed some "important elements".

This will give hope to Manchester City that they will be able to convince the CAS to overturn the ban and be reinstated in the competition.
